Dear Friend,
When Republicans gained control of the House of Representatives in 2010, we made a commitment to cut federal spending. I am pleased to report that for the second year in a row, Congress has cut spending. In fiscal year 2012, the federal government will spend $6 billion less than fiscal year 2011.
This was no easy task. We eliminated over 40 unnecessary government programs, saving taxpayers nearly $1.5 billion. We kept our commitment to eliminate earmarks. Although we made significant cuts, we focused on making smart investments and keeping critical services and programs. For example, we provided funding for the highest number of patrol agents and customs officers in our nation’s history to continue combating illegal immigration and border violence. Funding was also dedicated to speed up approval of drilling permits so we can create more jobs and develop this domestic resource.
While we still have a long way to go to restoring fiscal sanity in Washington, we are on the right path. As the New Year begins, you can be sure we will continue this commitment to cutting spending.
Sincerely,
Kay Granger
Member of Congress
