- Congresswoman Kay Granger (R-Fort Worth) today announced that four organizations in North Texas will receive a total of $1,350,535 from the U.S. Department of Education to help local students prepare for college.

The funding is being awarded through the Upward Bound program, which serves high school students from low-income families and families in which neither parent holds a bachelors degree.
The following organizations are receiving funding under the Upward Bound program:
• Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth, a total of $454,623 in two grants;
• Tarrant County College, $220,000;
• Texas Christian University, $441,288; and
• Weatherford College, $234,624.
"As we expand opportunities for students after high school, we must ensure they have the tools and motivation they will need to do college-level work," said Congresswoman Granger, who serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee that writes the annual spending bill for the Department of Education. "This funding will give countless young Texans the keys to a brighter future."
The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. All Upward Bound projects provide instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language.
Other services include instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school. Students are selected based on recommendations from local educators, social workers, clergy, or other interested parties.
