Congresswoman Kay Granger (R – Fort Worth) announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $3,373,450 in grant funding to the Tarrant County Health Department to support county HIV/AIDS services. The federal money will be used to provide local services which the North Central Texas HIV Planning Council deems the most pertinent to HIV/AIDS victims.
The funding will run through February 2005. More than 2,500 people are living with HIV in the Tarrant County area and use HIV services. The bulk of the new federal funds will pay for medical care and medications. Other services which will be funded by the federal grant include: Case management, dental care, counseling, nutritional services, transportation, treatment of HIV children, housing, and supportive services.
According to Tarrant County Health Department officials, the Planning Council has planned for the needs of more than 5,500 HIV clients and has been instrumental in providing more than $20 million in needed services since 1991.
