Careity Foundation will be honoring military and other heroes Tuesday night with its “Hats off to Heroes” dinner at the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse.
Careity Foundation Co-Founder Lyn Walsh said the event came about because the organization felt compelled to honor people who are making a difference in their community.
“There are always lots of deserving people,” Walsh said. “This also gives us a chance to show more of a presence in Parker County and show that we are local and appreciate and acknowledge the people here.”
More than 30 people are expected to be honored during the dinner as well, including Marine Marcus Burleson, who is home recovering from loosing both arms and one eye in combat. Congresswoman Kay Granger has selected him as her Hero. Walsh said there is an incredible group of honorees this year, thanks to the leadership and team of Honorary Chair Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler, who is an honorary chair with his wife, Gail, and Committee Chair Evon Markum and her husband, Don.
Markum said she and her husband were honored when asked to chair the event because of what it represents. “This event allows various businesses or table sponsors to honor a special person in their lives,”
Markum said in an e-mail. “Taking time to stop and thank someone is one of the most important things we can do. So often, thank you’s and I love you’s go unsaid until it’s too late.” Last year’s event raised close to $60,000.
All proceeds are kept local to benefit Parker County residents. As of last week, all tables were sold out but there were a few individual tickets still available, Walsh said.
