Until early this week, it appeared that the U.S Department of Homeland Security, the federal agency that oversees everything from Immigration and Customs Enforcement to the Transportation Security Administration, might have to partially shut down for lack of funding.
But thanks to Fort Worth’s own U.S. Rep. Kay Granger and 74 other House Republicans who joined with Democrats, the department now has the funding needed to operate through September.
Congressional Republicans have been at odds with President Obama since he issued what many have called “unconstitutional” executive actions intended to shield millions of undocumented immigrants from potential deportation.
Earlier this month, a Brownsville judge temporarily enjoined the administration from enacting the president’s order. The dispute is making its way through the courts, and that’s probably where it should be for now.
Standing up to the party base is never easy, especially in a state as red as Texas and a county as conservative as Tarrant. In fact, Granger was one of only five members of the Texas congressional delegation to support the funding bill.
Granger should be commended for her vote. Unlike many of her colleagues, she was able to overcome partisanship without sacrificing her principles. And that’s the kind of leadership that we need in Texas and Washington.
