This week, the House voted to fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

November 3, 2017

Dear Friends,

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to fully fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), an important safety net program that provides healthcare to lower-income children.

Since 1999, when CHIP was enacted with strong bipartisan support by the Texas Legislature, it has helped children in working families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid, but too little to afford private health insurance.

Nearly 400,000 Texas children – more than 10,000 in the twelfth district alone – rely on the CHIP program to provide basic healthcare services. These children would have no other affordable option for coverage otherwise.

I understand how difficult it can be to afford health care and how important it is that Texas families have access to affordable and hassle-free health care.

The bill that passed the House today would extend this vital program for five years, and would ensure that children will continue to receive coverage through our local Texas CHIP program rather than through Obamacare or Medicaid.

I have always been a strong supporter of cutting wasteful government spending and making sure that our precious taxpayer dollars are used wisely, and I’m pleased that the bill we passed also is fully paid for – ensuring that we will not burden future generations with more debt.

The Texas’ Children’s Health Insurance Program is critical to hundreds of thousands of Texans, and I am hopeful that the Senate will soon pass this important legislation to ensure that no child goes without the care they and their family deserve.

Sincerely,

Kay Granger

Member of Congress
