Friends-- This past Wednesday evening, I received the Leadership in Public Service Award from the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI). This award recognizes those who have made a profound impact on the Hispanic community in the United States and globally. I was proud to be recognized for my work on humanitarian issues in Central and South America, especially my work as Chairwoman of the House Working Group that probed the crisis at the southern border. When I first ran for Congress, I promised the people of District 12 that I would attack problems, not people, and I’ve worked hard to honor that promise each year I’ve been in Congress. In 2014, I was proud of the work we did to bring attention to the humanitarian crisis on our southern border, later traveling to Honduras and Guatemala to see firsthand why so many were coming. In addition, the work that I have done as a member of the House Committee on Appropriations has allowed me to influence foreign aid to our Western Hemisphere allies. As Chair of the House Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, I’ve worked tirelessly to choke off funds to oppressive regimes- especially Cuba, where so many still suffer There is still much work to be done, and I look forward to solving these pressing problems.
