Continued Medical Contracts Are Important To Fort Worth Economy, Says Granger

Congresswoman Kay Granger (R – Fort Worth) announces the renewed award of an important medical contract to the Fort Worth area.

Since 1993, the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) has provided medical, dental, and mental health care services to Fort Worth’s Federal Medical Center (FMC). Its renewed contract with Federal Medical Center retains area jobs and boosts the local economy.

In accordance with the agreement’s five-year term, the $46 million contract extends until FY 2008. Funds provide for retention and recruitment of physicians and specialists from Fort Worth and North Texas.

"Keeping contracts within our community is so important for our local economy," said Granger. "The contract between FMC and UNT Health Science Center saves taxpayer dollars and keeps skilled professionals in our area."

Federal Medical Center-Fort Worth is one of seven medical referral center facilities in the United States operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

FMC Fort Worth currently houses 1500 male inmates. More than one-third of the prison’s population was sent to FMC Fort Worth for chronic or specialty health care. UNTHSC works with local physicians to provide health care for the facility’s wards.
